Peter Nagy’s Nature Morte was the first Indian art gallery to be accepted in Art Basel (in 2006) and has been closely linked to the rise of the Subcontinent’s international superstars (Subodh Gupta, Bharti Kher, Jitish Kallat, Raqs Media Collective). The past year has not been without setbacks for Nagy, and not just because India hasn’t been the new China. Bose Pacia, the New York gallery with which Nature Morte is partnered, is relocating as part of a recession-inspired regrouping. But Nagy’s Berlin, Kolkata (with Bose Pacia) and New Delhi galleries make him a key interface betweeen the Western and South Asian art scenes – a fact driven home by the crowds of people who visited his booth at India Art Summit this summer.
