And the first shall be last (although the management would like to point out that everyone on this list – and, for that matter, not on this list – is a winner). Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light™, is the original contemporary art brand. Kinkade is the most collected living artist (a few years ago it was estimated that one in 20 American homes owned a work by the master), bringing art to the people in a way Damien Hirst can only dream of. Where Hirst has Sotheby’s, Kinkade has QVC. The American’s works come in various degrees of finish, from standard and textured prints, to prints hand-highlighted by a team of ‘master craftsmen’, to 100 percent original Kinkades. And while Kinkade’s religious inspiration may make him seem distanced from a traditional artist-as-bad-boy image, he’s not averse to a bit of ‘ritual territory marking’ (including, allegedly, urinating over Winnie the Pooh at Disneyland). What’s the luminous one been up to recently? Well, following hot on the heels of NASCAR® Thunder! and Country Living comes his newest release, Snow White Discovers the Cottage (all works 2008). Oh yeah, and 11 November sees the release (albeit straight to DVD) of the first-ever Thomas Kinkade movie (Thomas Kinkade’s Christmas Cottage). Suck on that, Mr Hirst.
