After months of warnings, the European Union confirmed that it will terminate its €2 million multiyear grant to the Biennale Foundation due to Russia’s participation in the 61st Venice Biennale.
The European Commission initially threatened to pull the funds in March, when it was first revealed that Russia would hold an exhibition in its pavilion. The decision to cancel the grant was then announced at a press conference in April, leaving the Biennale 30 days to defend itself. Now, following an assessment of the Biennale’s response, the decision has been confirmed.
‘Cultural events, funded by European taxpayers’ money, should safeguard democratic values, foster open dialogue, diversity and freedom of expression – values which are not respected in today’s Russia,’ said a Commission spokesperson, in a statement.
