New York’s New Museum has announced a new biennial sculpture award for women artists. Supported by a USD$2 million grant from the Hostetler Wrigley foundation, the award will go towards new works by five artists over a decade, each commissioned with USD$400,000 in prize money – the artworks will be displayed in the museum’s forthcoming public plaza.
‘This award both acknowledges and builds on the New Museum’s legacy of championing women artists,’ said director Lisa Phillips. The jury will be revealed in early 2022, with the first commission announced towards the end of that year.
Meanwhile, this year’s list of MacArthur fellows includes curator Nicole Fleetwood, music critic Hanif Abdurraqib, painter Jordan Casteel, poet Don Mee Choi, documentarian Cristina Ibarra, sculptor Daniel Lind-Ramos, filmmaker Alex Rivera, cinema studies scholar Jacqueline Stewart and choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar.
Each fellow receives $625,000 to spend as they see fit. ‘As we emerge from the shadows of the past two years, this class of Fellows helps us reimagine what’s possible’, said MacArthur Fellows managing director Cecilia Conrad in a statement. ‘They demonstrate that creativity has no boundaries.’
