Adam Sender is one of those new kids on the block – that is, the hedge fund billionaires – when it comes to investing in a collection of contemporary art. Although only in his late thirties, the Sender Collection was created in 1998 with a focus on minimalist and conceptual work from the 1960s onwards. Artists whose work features in his collection include names as disparate as Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Thomas Hirschhorn, Richard Prince, Sarah Lucas, Kara Walker and Pipilotti Rist. It is largely thanks to the interest of people like Sender that prices in the contemporary market have soared. Indeed Sender sold some of his collection at Phillips de Pury last year, against a reportedly hefty guarantee. Though there is much speculation as to what will happen to the hedge-fund buck if the art market dips, Sender’s interest precedes that of many of his peers. He is certainly seen as one of the most switched on in his field, and has said he will be buying art for years to come. At least that’s what we hope.
