While not necessarily indicative of the situation across their 18 galleries around the world, representing over 90 artists and estates, the Financial Times reported that the UK profits of the trio’s Hauser & Wirth gallery have fallen by almost 90 percent. In June, Iwan and Manuela decamped back to Switzerland, and the opening of a second London gallery has been put back two years. This hasn’t stopped expansion in other areas, though: the gallery – which has over a dozen spaces in Europe, Asia and North America, including their museum styled hubs in Somerset and Menorca, and their own research institute in New York – announced a new gallery in Palo Alto, aimed at Silicon Valley clientele, and started working with installation artist Cristina Iglesias, painter Qiu Xiaofei and sculptor Lee Bul, as well as the estate of Susan Rothenberg. Nor could the spring vibe in New York be less than celebratory, with a clean sweep of gallery artists and estates opening major solos at the city’s museums: Amy Sherald at the Whitney, Jack Whitten at MoMA, Rashid Johnson at the Guggenheim and Lorna Simpson at the Met.
