Although the Mugrabis – father Jose and sons David and Alberto – have yet to corner the market in Warhol (they claim to own 800 pieces), with their deep pockets and obsession with stars of the recent bubble – Hirst, Basquiat and Wool – they are the ‘market makers’ who hold up the rest of the trade. Lately this kind of business has been controversial; but the Mugrabis have been amassing their portfolio for more than 20 years, and having bought like hell during the last downturn, they know how to play the game for the long term.
