It has fallen to Pereira to shepherd the late Koyo Kouoh’s vision for next year’s Venice Biennale into existence. Before her death in May, Kouoh produced extensive notes, coming up with a fleshed-out curatorial brief, including the title In Minor Keys, and had begun to select artists and think about commissions. What gaps she left, Pereira, as one of a three-strong delivery team, is amply qualified to fill. A member of the RAW Material Company in Dakar since 2011, and its director of programmes during 2019–22, she continues there as an adviser: as well as hosting a day-long tribute to founder Kouoh, RAW continued with its energetic residencies (featuring this year the Chimurenga platform of writing, art and politics, DJ Maguette Dieng and filmmaker Janilda Bartolomeu) and academy programme for the research and study of artistic and curatorial practice and thought (taught by Felwine Sarr). Pereira juggled these responsibilities with her role as senior curator at Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt, which includes overseeing the Tongue and Throat Memories food programme, which Pereira also took to the Bukhara Biennial.
