In spring 2025 the deputy director and chief curator of New York’s Guggenheim Museum presented A Poem for Deep Thinkers, an exhibition surveying the 30-year career of American conceptual artist Rashid Johnson. Throughout the year, the show and its related musical performances defined the look and sound of the museum’s rotunda. Beckwith, who in 2024 was awarded the Driskell Prize – $50,000 in unrestricted research funds – for her contributions to African-American art history, also curated Collection in Focus / The Reach of Faith Ringgold at the Guggenheim, placing Ringgold’s work alongside Picasso, Chagall and and Tschabalala Self, and Echo Delay Reverb: American Art, Francophone Thought at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. She stepped up to steer the artistic direction of Documenta 16, the Kassel based quinquennial, which, despite recent controversies – including allegations of antisemitism levelled at works in its 2022 edition and the subsequent defacement of a Palestinian artist collective’s exhibition space – remains a key occasion for highlighting experimental and conceptual practices throughout the world.
