In January the self-described ‘mystical-Marxist’ was upgraded from artistic director of Shanghai’s Rockbund Art Museum to executive director and chief curator. In the months since, they have sought to create an institution that works against the idea of finished, consumable exhibitions, not least by inviting artist Irena Haiduk to occupy the institution with a multiyear project, including, for a time, a film set. Haiduk will make a feature movie, but the industry around the filming will also operate on an internal currency, the Nula – banknotes printed with the face of a teenage girl, which can be earned and spent at the institution. ‘Cultural life is so often streamlined for effortless consumption. In this landscape, the Nula economy proposes a subtle resistance: it asks for presence over purchase, slowness over speed,’ Zhu-Nowell told Cura. If this radical reimagining of the museum needs any historic inspiration, the new director provided it too in The Great Camouflage, a group show curated with Kandis Williams focusing on art that emerged from the remnants of revolutionary movements and transnational Black radical activism.
