Kunstmuseum Basel has announced Elena Filipovic to be its next director, taking over from Josef Helfenstein who currently helms the institution. Filipovic was selected after a ‘unanimous recommendation’ made by the museum’s committees and approved by Beat Jans, President of the Government of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.

Filipovic currently serves as director and head curator of Kunsthalle Basel, where since 2014 she mounted over 60 exhibitions, including solo exhibitions of Michael Armitage, Matthew Angelo Harrison, Anne Imhof, Deana Lawson and Anicka Yi; as well as group exhibitions including Ungestalt in 2017, New Swiss Performance Now in 2018 and INFORMATION (Today) in 2021. From 2008 to 2014, Filipovic was a senior curator at WIELS in Brussels. In 2022, Filipovic curated the Croatian pavilion at the 59th Venice Art Biennale and in 2008 co-curated the 5th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art with Adam Szymczyk.

Filipovic will begin her new role in June 2024.
