The Liverpool Biennial has revealed the curator for its upcoming 12th edition (scheduled to run June to September 2023): Khanyisile Mbongwa.

The Cape Town-based curator, artist and sociologist’s recent credentials include acting as chief curator for the Stellenbosch Triennale in 2020. In a statement, the biennial’s director Sam Lackey drew attention to Mbongwa’s ‘longstanding curatorial concerns around care and repair […] vital in thinking about new futures together with the city.’

Mbongwa said in a statement: ‘I […] am curious to find out what the city will show me about my curatorial processes during my time there. I am looking forward to co-creating with individuals, collectives and organisations both within Liverpool and beyond and am interested to see how the city has established itself historically, how it sustains itself in this moment and how it imagines its future.’
