Japan’s new National Center for Art Research (NCAR) under the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art launched on 28 March. The new Centre aims to promote the active use of art collections, build interpersonal networks, enrich educational programmes and support working artists, to comprehensively enhance museum activities in Japan.

Curator Mami Kataoka will direct the NCAR, while continuing her current directorship at the Mori Art Museum. Kataoka was a researcher on cultural policies at the NLI Research Institute and the inaugural chief curator at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery. She has also served as the first International Curator at the Hayward Gallery in London, Artistic Director of the 21st Biennale of Sydney (2018) and Artistic Director for the Aichi Triennale 2022.
