Julieta Aranda, born in Mexico City in 1975, has a deep scepticism about what it means to be an artist now. Involved in the unitednationsplaza project in Berlin (the residency programme that grew out of the cancelled Manifesta 6), she was instrumental in bringing the project to Mexico City in 2007. After studying film in New York, Julieta has moved into new areas, particularly with her recent work (exhibited at Sala Diaz in San Antonio) about the perception of time on the Pacific island nation of Kiribati, which shifted its timezone from ‘today’ to ‘tomorrow’ in 1995. Aranda’s work addresses both deep structure and passing relationships. Her coorganisation of the e-flux video rental archive is offset by her video, sculpture and photo-based work, which uses references to time to allude to moments of revolution and collapse. Forthcoming projects include a solo project at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and a solo show at Art in General in New York.
