Städelschule and Portikus name new rector and director

The Städelschule has announced Yasmil Raymond as its new rector. Raymond’s five-year term succeeds Philippe Pirotte, who steered the Frankfurt art school from 2014. Pirotte will continue as professor of art history and curatorial studies. Alongside the rectorship, Raymond becomes director of Portikus, Städelschule’s gallery.

Raymond is currently an associate curator in the department of painting and sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. For the institution’s reopening last year she programmed site-specific commissions with artists Kerstin Brätsch, Experimental Jetset, Goshka Macuga, Yoko Ono, Philippe Parreno and Haim Steinbach. Previously Raymond was curator of the Dia Art Foundation for six years, most notably curating exhibitions by Allora & Calzadilla (2015); Thomas Hirschhorn (2013); and Jean-Luc Moulène (2011). She received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999, and an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, in 2004.

Städelschule’s other tutors include Johan Bettum, Daniel Birnbaum, Gerard Byrne, Isabelle Graw, Judith Hopf, Hassan Khan, Tobias Rehberger, Willem de Rooij and Haegue Yang.
