Fundación Casa Wabi and ArtReview are pleased to announce that Mónica Naranjo Uribe is the winner of their joint residency award for 2020. Naranjo Uribe was selected through an open-call for proposals for a project that engages with and/or benefits the local communities around Puerto Escondido, Mexico, where Casa Wabi is located. She will be able to carry out her project over a six week residence at Casa Wabi in either spring or autumn 2021.
Naranjo Uribe’s work examines how we experience and relate to territories, typically finding the starting point for these inquiries in other disciplines. For the residency, she will build on her research into places, collaborating with local residents to produce an illustrated map and five zines – also illustrated – of Puerto Escondido and the surrounding towns. During workshops, the project will explore how collective knowledge and personal memories inform our understanding of the areas we inhabit. www.monicanaranjou.info
The Bogotá-based artist was selected by a jury comprising Bosco Sodi, artist and founder of Fundación Casa Wabi, Mark Rappolt, ArtReview editor-in-chief, Carla Sodi, Casa Wabi director and Paola Jasso, Casa Wabi curator. The jury considered the quality of previous work, the potential for the community project and its feasibility within the region.
Fundación Casa Wabi and ArtReview would also like to thank everyone who applied for sending in their proposals.
