Albert Uderzo, 1927–2020

Albert Uderzo, who, with writer René Goscinny, created the Adventures of Asterix comics, has died.

Born in France to Italian parents, Uderzo initially worked as an aircraft engineer before he met Goscinny in 1951. Together they created the comic Oumpah-pah le Peau-Rouge and then later began work on their Gaulish warriors Asterix and Obelix. The series debuted in Pilote magazine’s first issue, quickly gaining popularity in the French speaking world. In 1977, following Goscinny’s death, Uderzo took over as writer before selling he rights to Hachette in 2009. The stories have since been turned into cartoons, books, games and films and even had a theme park named for them.
