As part of Art on the Underground, Transport for London (TFL) has launched Underline, a year-long celebration of the Victoria line through various music and visual arts commissions. The commissions are intended to reflect on the line’s history (opened in 1969, it was the first new Underground line to be built in 60 years, linking Victoria to Walthamstow), as well as on the Arts & Crafts ethos of William Morris, who was a key influence on Frank Pick, the managing director of London Underground in the early twentieth century.
Underline will launch with Giles Round’s Design Work Leisure, a design office revisiting the values of twentieth-century design in Britain that will produce prototypes of functional objects for the Underground, including a limited edition Oyster Card. Other commissions include a series of films, shot across the network, by Liam Gillick; a music composition by Matt Rogers to be performed live on stations next spring, by the London Sinfonietta; a film and photographic series by Zineb Sedira and a project to improve the entrance at Seven Sisters by Turner Prize-nominated architects collective Assemble.
