Join ArtReview and Ursula on Tuesday 1 April for a conversation with Sonia Boyce and Ekow Eshun – the first in a monthly talk series
ArtReview and Ursula magazine have teamed up to host a series of talks on the first Tuesday of every month in the Wine Bar underneath the Farm Shop in London’s Mayfair. Staged as a series of intimate conversations and more, set in a relaxed and casual bar, the series will allow audiences a insight into the inspirations, working methods and passions of some of today’s key visionaries from artists and thinkers, to filmmakers, designers, philosophers and architects. The events will span creative thinking and how it evolves to match our times. The series is a celebration of traditional conviviality, to be experienced live by those present rather than remotely, on screen. The talk will take place in the restaurant, where food and drink can be ordered throughout the evening.

About Sonia Boyce:
Sonia Boyce (b. London, 1962) is an interdisciplinary artist and academic working across film, drawing, photography, print, sound, and installation. In 2022, she presented FEELING HER WAY for the British Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale for which she was awarded the Golden Lion for Best National Participation. Boyce came to prominence in the early 1980s as a key figure in the burgeoning British Black Arts Movement with figurative pastel drawings and photo collages that addressed issues of race and gender in Britain. Since the 1990s, Boyce has shifted significantly to embrace a social practice that invites improvisation, collaboration, movement, and sound with other people. Working across a range of media, Boyce’s practice today is focused on questions of artistic authorship and cultural difference.
In 2016, Boyce was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in London and in 2023, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Science in Boston. In 2014 she became a Professor at University of the Arts London, where she holds the inaugural Chair in Black Art & Design. In the 2024 King’s New Year Honours List, Boyce was awarded a Damehood. Her work is in many UK and international museum collections including TATE, London; Saastamoinen Foundation, Finland; Centre Pompidou, France and Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, USA
About Ekow Eshun:
Ekow Eshun is a writer and curator. He is Chairman of the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group, and the former Director of the ICA, London. He is the curator of exhibitions including, most recently, the critically acclaimed ‘In the Black Fantastic’ at the Hayward Gallery, London, and author of books including ‘Africa State of Mind’ and ‘Black Gold of the Sun’, shortlisted for the Orwell prize. He has contributed to books on artists including Mark Bradford, Chris Ofili, Kehinde Wiley, John Akomfrah and Wangechi Mutu. His writing has appeared in publications including the New York Times, Financial Times and The Guardian.
