Recently recognised as the wealthiest man in the state of Ohio, Leslie Wexner is founder of the retail group Limited Brands, which employs over 18,000 people and reported a turnover of $9.6 billion in 2006. Among the world’s leading art collectors and reknowned philanthropists, the Wexners established the Wexner Foundation in 1984 and the Wexner Center for the Arts, a contemporary gallery and ‘research laboratory for the arts’, in 1989. The latter hosts exhibitions, films and performances, and has welcomed everyone from Robert Rauschenberg to Gerhard Richter through its doors. In 1999 Wexner paid $42.1 million for Picasso’s Nude on a Black Armchair (1932) and then donated it to the Center.
