The conference, organized by the Doha Institute and Rubaiyat Qatar, seeks critical redefinition and approaches to water ways
Throughout the twentieth century, water has been an object of study by different disciplines, perspectives and cultures, often driven by a variety of ideological positionings. An ever-present subject of political, economic, geographic and cultural debate, water has, in parallel, been used materially and symbolically in a variety of artistic, literary, cinematic, and sonic projects, within the creative environment. Previously taken for granted and fixed units of analysis, or ways of seeing, based on concepts such as time, space, nation-state, socio-economic formation, are no longer seen as bounded and delimited based on the ‘permanent’ imagined site of ‘land’. Influx, fluidity, perturbation, liquidity, self-representation, immigration, homelessness, nomadism, stateless, are but examples of the discursive and aesthetic formations used by researchers and artists who consciously and constantly reposition their epistemic and aesthetic premises across the continuum between the two poles of water–land.
More recently, the intersections between climate change, late capitalism and neo-colonialism, a globalized trade system, the advent of the Anthropocene, and the deep, mostly catastrophic, transformations of those junctions, have incited many scholars and artists to look for alternative understandings of the role of water and its intrinsic relationship to life that explore better futures, not only in the context of humans but also of non-humans and the very fabric of the planet itself.
Such approaches will be the focus of this conference, which is organized by the Doha Institute and Qatar’s newest visual arts festival, Rubaiyat Qatar. We seek critical redefinition and approaches to water ways. We invite proposals for papers spanning a range of disciplines, including, but not limited to, politics, economics, geography, sociology, anthropology, history, philosophy, cultural studies and the creative arts, that take water as their central theme. Within this we would welcome proposals that consider water as both a site of traditional and emerging knowledge, of regulation and of liberation, of the managed and the unmanaged, and as a site of fluidity and liquidity that might offer greater understanding of the past, the present and what might be to come.
We believe by creating such cross-sectional platforms, the conference will boost the relevant communities of researchers and artists and further develop the quantity as well as the quality of water studies and artistic projects, while emphasizing the inter-sectional nature of the epistemic and the aesthetic aspects of water in our times and beyond.
About Rubaiyat Qatar
Rubaiyat Qatar is a countrywide quadrennial visual-arts exhibition that will launch its inaugural edition in October 2026. A collaborative project in conjunction with a number of Qatar-based institutions, the programme also incorporates a variety of academic programmes, pop-up exhibitions and workshops that will unfold over the years preceding the opening.
The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies
The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) was founded in Qatar in 2015 as a Doha-based independent institution of higher education. The Institute offers MA and PhD programs in two schools: the School of Social Sciences and Humanities and the School of Economics, Administration and Public Policy. The Institute adopts a student-centred approach to learning, promotes interdisciplinary research, and uses Arabic as the primary language of instruction, with fluency in English a requirement. DI aims to graduate researchers and practitioners who can advance knowledge and better the human condition, while upholding the highest scientific, professional and ethical standards. It provides advanced leadership-focused training that emphasizes the competencies necessary to satisfy the region’s needs in sustainable development and intellectual advancement. طرق المياه: معارف وجماليات
خلال القرن العشرين، دُرِس الماء من قبل مجالات بحثية، ومواقع نظر، وثقافات متعددة، كانت في أغلبها مدفوعة بمواقف إيديولوجية مُسبقة. وشكَّل الماء، بموازاة كونه موقعاً مثيراً للجدل السياسي والاقتصادي والجغرافي والثقافي، مادة ورمزاً للعديد من المشاريع الإبداعية الفنية والأدبية والسينمائية والصوتية. إن وحدات التحليل، وطرق الرؤية، التي كانت حتى فترة قريبة مفهومة ضمنياً، مثل الزمن، والفضاء، دولة-القومية، التشكيلات الاقتصادية-الاجتماعية، لم تعد واضحة ومحددة بناء على موقع “اليابسة/الأرض”، ذلك الموقع المتخيل على أنه ثابت. إن الباحثين/ات والفنانين/ات الذين يتحركون، بوعي وباستمرار، ما بين قطبي الثنائية ماء-أرض بحثاً عن إمكانيات معرفية وجمالية بديلة، يستخدمون تشكيلات خطابية وجمالية جديدة، مثل التدفق، السيولة، الخلخلة والاهتزاز، تمثيل الذات، الهجرة، البداوة الجديدة، حالة دون-دولة أو دون-جنسية، التشرد، وغيرها.
مؤخرا، أدى التقاطع ما بين التغييرات المناخية، والرأسمالية المتأخرة، والاستعمار الجديد، ونظام التجارة العالمي السائد، وصعود حقبة التأثير البشري، أو الأنثروبوسين، والتحولات الكارثية الناتجة عنه، إلى قيام الفنانون/ات والباحثون/ات بالبحث عن فهم بديل لدور المياه، وارتباطها العضوي بالحياة، يمكّن من استكشاف مستقبل أفضل، ليس فقط للإنسان/ة لوحده/ا، ولكن أيضاً لكل ما هو موجود على كوكب الأرض، كما نسيج هذا الكوكب بذاته.
ستشكل هذه التوجهات محور هذا المؤتمر، الذي ينظمه معهد الدوحة للدراسات العليا، ومهرجان الفنون التشكيلية الجديد رباعيات قطر. فمن خلال المؤتمر سنسعى للبحث في إعادة تعريف نقدي، كما في توجهات بديلة، للانشباك المعرفي والجمالي مع طرق المياه ومساراتها المتشعبة. ندعو المهتمين/ات بتقديم مقترحات لأوراق بحثية تنطلق من المياه كثيمة مركزية، وذلك من مختلف المجالات، على سبيل المثال لا الحصر: العلوم السياسية، الاقتصاد، الجغرافيا، علم الاجتماع، الأنثروبولوجيا، الأدب المقارن، التاريخ، الفلسفة، الدراسات الثقافية، والفنون الإبداعية. ونرحب بالمقترحات التي ترى بالمياه موقعاً لإنتاج للمعرفة التقليدية، كما لتلك الصاعدة الجديدة، وموقعا للضبط وللحرية، وموقعا للمسيطر عليهم ولأولئك غير القابلين للسيطرة عليهم، وموقعا للانسيابية وللسيولة، وهي مواقع ممكن أن تقترح فهماً أعمق وأشمل للماضي، وللحاضر، ولما قد يحمله المستقبل.
نحن نؤمن بأن خلق هذه المنصات المتقاطعة معرفياً وجمالياً، سيُمَكِّن المشاركين/ات بالمؤتمر من دعم مجتمع الباحثين/ات والفنانين/ات، وسيطور دراسات المياه والمشاريع الفنية كماً ونوعاً، وذلك من خلال التشديد على طبيعة المياه المعرفية والجمالية التقاطعية في زمننا هذا، وفيما يتجاوزه من أزمنة أخرى كذلك.
رباعية قطر
رباعية معرض للفنون البصرية، يمتد على كامل نطاق دولة قطر، ينطلق بنسخته الافتتاحية في أكتوبر 2026، ويُقام كلّ أربعة أعوام. يُشرك كوادرينالي رباعية العديد من المؤسسات المرتكزة في قطر، ويتضمن برنامجه العديد من الفعاليات الأكاديمية، والمعارض المنبثقة وورشات العمل، وغيرها من الفعاليات التي ستتكشف في السنوات التي تسبق الافتتاح.
معهد الدوحة للدراسات العليا
تأسس معهد الدوحة للدراسات العليا في قطر في عام 2015 كمؤسسة مستقلة للدراسات العليا، ومقره الدوحة. يقدّم المعهد برامج الماجستير والدكتوراه في كليتين: كلية العلوم الاجتماعية والإنسانية، وكلية الاقتصاد والإدارة والسياسات العامة، معتمدًا اللغة العربية كلغة أساس للدراسة والبحث، مع اشتراط اتقان الإنجليزية. يعمل المعهد على تأهيل باحثين قادرين على الإسهام في إنتاج المعرفة وفق المعايير العالميّة، ومهنيين متمكّنين في المهارات المتقدمة في تخصصاتهم، وقياديين قادرين على الاستجابة لحاجات العالم العربي في التنمية المستدامة، والنهوض الفكري والاجتماعي. يتبنى المعهد تكامل التعليم والتعلّم مع البحث العلمي، مع مراعاة تكامل التخصصات ومحورية الطلاب في العملية التعليمية، ويوفر لمنتسبيه الحرية الأكاديمية، مع التأكيد على قيم النزاهة والمهنية.
