Istanbul Biennial has picked Iwona Blazwick as the curator of its 18th edition, which is set to run from 14 September to 17 November 2024. Blazwick was selected by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), organiser of the Biennial.

‘We are delighted that Iwona Blazwick has accepted our invitation to curate the 18th Istanbul Biennial. Her depth of experience and her long association with the Biennial make her an ideal choice to lead the team for 2024,’ said Görgün Taner, General Director of IKSV who announced the appointment.

Curator and art critic Iwona Blazwick OBE is currently chair of the Royal Commission’s Arts AlUla project in Saudi Arabia, after departing from her role as Director of the Whitechapel Gallery in London, where she stayed from 2001 to 2022. Before that, she served at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts and Tate Modern, where she inaugurated the Tate Turbine Hall commissioning programme. Writing extensively on contemporary art and publishing several monographs, Blazwick was also the founding editor of Contemporary Artists Monographs and Themes and Movements in Art at Phaidon Press.
