The prize recognises an artist ‘who has made a profound contribution to a particular medium, influencing their own and subsequent generations of artists’

Jenny Holzer will receive the Whitechapel Gallery Art Icon award in January 2023. The annual prize – of which this will be its tenth edition – recognises an artist ‘who has made a profound contribution to a particular medium, influencing their own and subsequent generations of artists’.
Holzer is best known for her large-scale text-based works situated in public spaces which invite reflection on socio-political issues.

Whitechapel director Gilane Tawadros commented: ‘We are delighted that Jenny Holzer will be Whitechapel Gallery’s Art Icon in 2023 in recognition of her ground-breaking practice as an artist who has consistently addressed social justice issues with elegance and humour throughout her decades-long career.’
