Chinese multimedia artist

Beijing-based Hui graduated from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2003 with a BFA. For his final-year project, he constructed a car that, when mobile, would dissolve the sense of direction and time as it appeared to move both backwards and forward at once. Since then, Hui sought to use technology in his work to find visual expression for the intangible, exploring ideas such as existence, mortality and spirituality. His use of lasers was rooted in his fascination with materiality as well as his interest in the impact of modern manufacturing processes and methods.

Hui’s work was widely exhibited, with solo shows at institutions such as SCAD Museum of Art, the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art and Mannheimer Kunstverein. On the occasion of his 2020 exhibition at the Artificial Light Art Museum in Eindhoven, Hui said of his work: ‘I also understand that there are elements in my works that might make people feel a little puzzled or even a little scared when first confronted with them. However, from what I have experienced, it is not just the visual impact, but also the ‘otherness’ or their mysticism that can have this kind of result. It is somehow similar to … Shamanism.’
