Mark Feary will curate the 2028 Adelaide Biennial. The New Zealander is currently artistic director of Gertrude Contemporary in Melbourne, and has a strong background in photography, with previous roles at the Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney; Tokyo Metropolitan
Museum of Photography; and the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne.
Feary was appointed from an open call to oversee the show, which is dedicated to Australian art, though he wasn’t giving much away as to the theme of his pitch, noting only that the exhibition ‘will be focussed upon capturing a particular mood, acknowledging problematic histories, and an increasingly uncertain and turbulent present, but motivated by the persistence of optimism.’
His exhibition will be open 3 March to 4 June 2028 as part of the
2028 Adelaide Festival.
