Open-call for writers: Ukrainian Photography Inspiring UK Words

Andrii Dostliev, Lia Dostlieva, Fairy Castles of Donetsk, 2018–2020

Writers wanted! To celebrate Eurovision 2023, Open Eye Gallery, The Double Negative and ArtReview collaboratively invite writers from the Liverpool City Region to pitch article ideas.

Co-published across The Double Negative and ArtReview, the commissioned piece will bridge two countries, image and text during the largest ever exhibit of Ukrainian photography in the UK, HOME

This callout is open to writers and critics from, or living in, the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool, Halton, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens or Wirral) at any stage of their career.

Deadline: 5pm, Sunday 30 April 2023.

The theme and programme:

‘Home’ is a multidimensional concept often related to house, family, haven, self or gender. What does it mean to be at home – is it a place, space, feeling, culture, practices, and/or an active state of being in the world?

Your photography criticism will contribute to Open Eye Gallery’s HOME: Ukrainian photography inspiring UK words (4 May-28 May 2023), an exhibition of photography and poetry across 40 venues, as well as wider commentary around EuroFestival, which will take over Liverpool in the lead up to The Eurovision Song Contest.

Your pitch:

An in-depth, critical (meaning, examination, interpretation, analysis or appraisal) magazine feature, essay, or experimental text of 1000 words. It should pay close attention to the work of one or more photographers exhibiting in HOME, who can all be found in a PDF document embedded here.

Publishing and audiences:

This is an exceptional opportunity to introduce our national and international audiences to photographers from Ukraine, and a new writer from the Liverpool City Region, during Eurovision 2023.

Your writing will be read by specialist and general audiences across two magazines: The Double Negative (independent, dedicated art criticism based in Liverpool since 2011, platforming writers and artists from the North of England) and ArtReview (one of the world’s leading contemporary art magazines, based in London since 1948).

Writer’s fee with travel bursary:

£600 for 1000 words, including research, editing time, and travel expenses.

Timeline:

Pitches received by 30 April, shortlisted, and one person selected and notified by 8 May. Text will be written, edited and published online by 25 May 2023.

Submit your pitch:

Please email pitches to The Double Negative Co-editor, Laura Robertson (Laura@thedoublenegative.co.uk), by 5pm, Sunday 30 April 2023, including:

  • A short pitch outlining your idea (200 words maximum)
  • A short biography, including what area you’re living in, or come from, in the Liverpool City Region (50 words or less)
  • A link to your writing or website (or attached example), giving us a sense of your style.

We look forward to hearing from you! Good luck, or, Удачі!

HOME is commissioned by Culture Liverpool / Liverpool City Council
