The billionaire’s personal finances have fluctuated this year, reflecting a slowdown in the luxury goods market (the Arnault family owns 48 percent of LVMH) amid the US-led tariff war, but that has not had an effect on Arnault’s Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. At the start of the year, David Hockney was the centre of much celebration, enjoying his largest-ever show; that retrospective gave way to a survey for Gerhard Richter that spanned the entirety of the ninety-three-year-old-painter’s career, from his 1960s photographic paintings to his new ink-cloud drawings. All of which perhaps reflects a more global pivot from state funded institutions to private initiatives, particularly in Paris, where the Pompidou is closed for lengthy renovations. A more elusive figure on the gallery circuit than his great rival François Pinault, Arnault has built a collection (330 works of which are on permanent display) that is ‘nothing but masterpieces’, as one art dealer told Art News. A personal penchant for Van Gogh is kept private, however, while the public displays at the Fondation stretch from Alberto Giacometti bronzes to vibey videoworks by the likes of Ed Atkins.
