‘Great art is often born out of great despair,’ the husband-and-wife duo
behind India’s Experimenter gallery told Travel + Leisure magazine. At
their Mumbai space, Christopher Kulendran Thomas, showing with the
gallery for the first time, addressed Sri Lanka’s colonial history; in one of the two Kolkata galleries, Sri Lankan artist Pushpakanthan Pakkiyarajah brought his ecologically minded rope sculptures – now being exhibited in the Mumbai space; while Padmini Chettur’s video and dance work addressed ‘an age of growing disembodiment’. In London they supported Naeem Mohaiemen’s latest commission, a gloomy meditation on the failures of the US left for Artangel; while in New York, gallery artists CAMP were the subject of a miniretrospective at MoMA. Art is not, the Rajas emphatically told Travel + Leisure, ‘about luxury’. They walk the talk, hosting a fully fledged education programme; an open-call artist production fund; and the 14th edition of their ‘curators’ hub’, a seminar programme featuring representatives of, this year, Kunsthalle Basel, New York’s Creative Time and Dakar’s RAW Material Company.
