The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has announced the appointment of Miren Arzalluz as the new Director General of the museum.

The move will see Arzalluz return to her birth city of Bilbao from her position as director of Paris’s Fashion Museum–Palais Galliera. Prior to her time in Paris, she was director of Etxepare Euskal Institutua, a public institution of the Basque Government created to promote Basque language and contemporary culture internationally.

In 2024 Arzalluz was appointed as Chevalière de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture, while she has also been appointed as member of the jury for the 2025 US National Design Awards of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York.

Arzalluz replaces outgoing director Juan Ignacio Vidarte, who announced in May his decision to step down after thirty-two years in order to promote generational change. She will take up her new role from 1 April 2025.
