Thiago de Paula Souza will curate the eighth Athens Biennale, which will take place in Spring 2027. The Brazilian brings his experience working on last year’s Bienal de São Paulo, having also been a member of the curatorial team of the 10th Berlin Biennale (2018).
In 2024, De Paula Souza was also the cocurator of the 38th Panorama da Arte Brasileira at MAM São Paulo, as well as the historic survey show Some May Work as Symbols: Art Made in Brazil, 1950s–70s at Raven Row, London. He currently serves on the artistic committee of NESR Art Foundation in Angola.
The Greek exhibition was founded as an independent initiative in 2005, but has now established a new management structure, led by a collector-heavy board of trustees and advisors. Billionaire shipbuilders George Economou and Dakis Joannou, as chairs, assume overall oversight of the event, while curatorial committee featuring Massimiliano Gioni, Katerina Gregos, Stefanie Hessler and Gabi Ngcobo picked De Paula Souza for the 2027 job.
