With Yana Peel now no longer directly involved in the running of Outset, Candida Gertler is the sole driver of the contemporary art fund that the pair cofounded in 2003. Not that Outset has slowed: this year its efforts underwrote projects at Documenta 13 and the Berlin Biennial, the Penzance Convention and shows by (among others) Shezad Dawood, Zarina Bhimji and Omer Fast. At the heart of Outset’s activities, though, remains the Outset/Frieze Art Fair Fund to Benefit the Tate Collection, which every year swoops early on Frieze’s white tent – now tents – to cherry-pick from the offerings and enrich Tate’s collection. Ten years down the line, it has added up to £1 million worth of art for Serota’s culture palaces – and accordingly, for the rest of us.
