The artist coined the term ‘data painting’ for the use of AI in his work, producing largescale installations trained on a variety of source materials. His 2023 work Glacier Dreams, shown this year at Kunsthaus Zürich, was produced using more than 100 million images of glaciers, while at the Guggenheim Bilbao, in March, the artist used AI to reinterpret the archive of the building’s architect, Frank Gehry, for a new project. This immersive, tech-driven work does well in the experience economy: Christie’s and Inter Miami CF got him to produce a homage to football star Lionel Messi for a show at Rockefeller Plaza, New York, proceeds from the sale of which – $1.87m – went to multiple charities in the team’s outreach programmes; while Bulgari asked the artist to train his algorithms on natural elements like flowers, clouds and water to produce a visualisation of the brand’s new perfume Tygar. Solo shows, such as his long-term installation at Dubai’s Museum of the Future, will continue, and from next year Anadol will have his own institution: the 2,322sqm Dataland, a museum of AI art in Los Angeles.
